- theory devised by roboticist Masahiro Mori, which emphasizes the relationship between an object's level of resemblance to a human and its degree of familiarity (sympathy). The valley corresponds to objects (such as humanoid robots and animated conversational agents) that bear a strong resemblance to a human, but whose flaws, whether in their appearance, movements or dialogic capabilities, create discomfort and rejection among human observers.
