Concept information

PREFERRED TERM

constraint programming

DEFINITION(S)

  • a field of artificial intelligence concerned with solving combinatorial problems. The user models his problem in a simple language, identifying the unknowns and constraints he wishes to impose. An algorithm (called a solver), based on generic solving principles, then provides a solution. In such a system, the user doesn't need to know the algorithmic or mathematical techniques involved in solving the problem (e.g., calculating the solutions to a set of mathematical equations).
